After several days of continuous research, and trial and error. I finally managed to solve the issue, and I can't believe how simple it was...

I had the same problem and solved it by the following steps:

1) Open FireFox and enter about:preferences in the URL.

2) In the General tab scroll to the bottom.

Not all graphics adapters are shown as VGA.

My guess is the vmdk is sparse or compressed. Qcow2 supports sparse images too.

You could try tweaking the -s (sparse size) argument to see if it's the sparseness.
