You can create a shell script available within your path, maybe call it r.sh.

That script should call the gnome-shell --replace command, and then the commands you use to fix your display...

The above mentioned commands by @Smoke didn't worked, but they just started installing the google chrome again.
The real solution to this problem was mentioned in this question's answer......

Removing the path is better done using find's -printf option:
