The problem was not, as answered by IanC, caused by the file permissions (sudo happily accepts a file owned by root:root 0644, as I can confirm now, although it should...

I just went for it and there weren't any problems. In my GRUB menu it still has "Windows 7" as the option, but it boots to Windows 10 Tech Preview.
