The problem was that kscreen
got uninstalled somehow. I reinstalled it and the problem was fixed.
Ok this is what I came up with. Logins are without password entry, just click the "Log In" button. Password is preserved and works fine whenever prompted. I haven't tried to reverse it but...

It turns out that the DisplayPort expansion card I was using was defective. After using a new expansion card, my laptop and monitor work together without any problems.
