Ubuntu checks for updates on every boot automatically. You can't run the same command manually at the same time.
If you really want to do it manually, disable automatic updates.

Well, if it really had a motherboard hardware problem, then it seems unlikely that its failure had anything to do with your installation of ubuntu. My suggestion would be to boot into ubuntu via...
sudo apt-get purge steam-launcher && sudo apt-get autoremove
