The problem is you haven't added it the .bashrc. file so it can be seen:

  1. From the terminal:

     nano /home/username/.bashrc

 # or

 nano...

I found out what the issue was. I had a setting enabled in Gnome Tweaks to highlight the mouse position by pressing the ctrl key. Disabling this fixed the issue. I had totally forgot about this...

I don't know if it was already there at the time or not, but the way to do it now in 2018 is:

  • Tools > Preferences
  • Make sure "Simple" is selected in the bottom left in show...
