There's no need to erase the old install prior to installing the new one. Just boot from the LiveCD of the new Ubuntu, choose manual partitioning and make sure you choose to format the root...
I installed Lubuntu 12.04 yesterday, and I just installed wine using sudo apt-get install wine
, and once done I was able to find it on the Lubuntu menu. See image below.
You just need to do it (TM). Only some observations:
