The following fail message appeared when I tried installing Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on WSL. I'm not able to type anything, therefore, I'm not able to finish the set up.

Those are the outputs I'm getting from "wsl -l -o" and "wsl -l -v" commands.

This is the Ubuntu-22.04 running after the failed installation.

How can I fix it?

My answer is the same as Option 2 from @NotTheDr01ds, but eliminates the need to uninstall and reinstall the failed Ubuntu. Much thanks to him, as I wouldn't have come up with this answer without insight gleaned from his answer.

  1. Instead of uninstalling and re-installing, go to Settings > Apps > Ubuntu 22.04 LTS > Advanced Options > Reset. This seems to take you to the same state as the Ubuntu download being installed from the Microsoft Store but before it is unpacked.

  2. wsl --set-default-version 1

The operation completed successfully.

  1. Now start Ubuntu by clicking on the desktop or start menu icon to successfully start Ubuntu with WSL 1.

  2. Exit the Ubuntu shell, then wsl --shutdown

  3. wsl -l -v

  NAME            STATE           VERSION
* Ubuntu-22.04 Stopped 1

  1. wsl --set-version Ubuntu-22.04 2

Conversion in progress, this may take a few minutes...

Conversion complete.

  1. wsl --set-default-version 2

  1. wsl -l -v

  1. Start Ubuntu again and verify that it still works, now under WSL 2.
