I have recently switched from windows 10 to Ubuntu 20.04 everything is going pretty well so far but one feature from Windows I kind of miss was that, when you pressed the print button, an app called 'snipping tool' would open up, allowing you to grab a screenshot of an area, a window or the whole screen.

Of course, I know that there's the screenshots app on Ubuntu that does the same thing. But by default, the print button just copies a screenshot of the whole screen to the clipboard. How do I change it, so that the app itself opens up like this?

like this?

(I tried making a custom shortcut with the command 'gnome-screenshot', but it just saves a screenshot to my pictures.)

Quite some shortcuts are defined by default in Ubuntu to take screenshots:

  • Save a screenshot: Print

  • Save a screenshot of an area: Shift+Print

  • Save a screenshot of a window: Alt+Print

Add Ctrl to these combinations to copy the screenshot to the clipboard rather than to a file.

Of course, you can instead summon the window of the application if you prefer so. Then bind the following command to a shortcut key:

gtk-launch org.gnome.Screenshot

This causes you to open the tool through the launcher that you see in the Applications overview. The actual command that causes that behavior is gnome-screenshot --interactive.
