After playing around a lot and experimenting with plugins, I was able to find a solution to the above problem. It was nothing but an extension of the above answer and the hints I got from

These commands allowed me to remove the offending packages

previously the next command failed now its working

dpkg --remove  unixodbc-dev
(Reading database ... 725562 files...

Install gnome-tweak-tool. There is a setting called "Have file manager handle the desktop" that you can switch off.
