The exact same thing happened to me. Here is my story:
It may work if you first bring the interface down:
sudo ifconfig wlan1 down
sudo iwconfig wlan1 mode monitor
Check:
iwconfig
...
Reinstalling your complete system is not needed. If anything you can always do
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql-server
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.5
...
open your terminal and type as sudo apt-get install gnonf-editor
then open it by typing as gconf-editor
.
Then navigate to /
apps
->...
