I was having a similar problem after switching users. I was able to get the touch pad to work by reloading the kernel module:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse...
Tested in Ubuntu 14.04: Search for the "Disks" application
Select Device, select volume, Click cogs (more actions) ->...
Go to your site-packages folder (in your case: /home/max/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages) and delete folders with "~".
