Same happended to me. But, first of all, after I upgraded to 14.04 I didn't have this problem, it happened like two days ago after an update. The point is that I solved it by applying a solution...

I was having a similar problem after switching users. I was able to get the touch pad to work by reloading the kernel module:

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse...

Go to your site-packages folder (in your case: /home/max/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages) and delete folders with "~".
